Weaving together personal faith and climate change

Although climate change is often thought of as something external to an individual person, it is interwoven with personal spirituality, as well. This was the conclusion of a panel of three faith leaders during a session at the Interfaith Summit on Climate Change held on 22 September.

The workshop, entitled “Ethics, Spirituality and Climate Change” was hosted by the World Council of Churches (WCC) and Religions for Peace as part of the summit which was held in New York City.

The session was held on the second day of the interfaith summit. Sunday the group signed a joint statement calling for climate justice and asking that world leaders meeting this week at the UN working toward a fair and binding agreement addressing climate change. . .

White House pushing churches to be ‘green’?
See what else Obama’s faith adviser is nudging
By Aaron Klein

The “greenest” church on the planet? Scripture as it relates to the Palestinians? Fighting American “racial injustice”?

Meet the latest addition to President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, a White House group already replete with advocates for using religion to advance “social justice.”

In January, Obama named to his faith council Lynne Hybels, a leader of Willow Creek Church, an inter-denominational, multi-generational megachurch located in a Chicago suburb.

The church is led by Hybels’ husband, Bill, a social justice advocate who created the Global Leadership Summit, an international Christian group.

Earth-centered religions now have a chapel at the Air Force Academy.

The Gazette of Colorado Springs reports Academy superintendent Lt. Gen. Michael Gould this week dedicated the Cadet Chapel Falcon Circle on a 7,200-foot hill top that overlooks the main cadet chapel.

Religious tolerance at the elite school became a concern in 2004 when a survey found some cadets felt ostracized because they weren’t religious.

Gould says the worship space is meant to help people of all religions. Earth-centered religious groups include New Age, paganism, Wicca, and Druids.

Mixing Paganism with the Passion
By Jan Markell
Olive Tree Ministries

A very special week was hijacked by the environmental movement last week. What is known as Earth Day landed on the same day as Good Friday, so our crucified Lord had to share the spotlight that day. And if you think this was only the typical antics of the religious Left, think again. Evangelicals have now jumped into this arena. The cause of caring for God’s creation is our responsibility, although we cannot “save the planet” as many herald. Should conservative Christians really be making the theological leap that it was significant that both observances were placed on the calendar on the same day?

The Episcopal Church issued a statement last week saying that the two events on the same day had “profound significance.” Additionally, the statement read, “On the day we mark the crucifixion of Christ, let us remember that when Earth is degraded and species go extinct, a part of God’s body experiences a different type of crucifixion and another way of seeing and experiencing God is diminished.”

It’s a new law, that “makes world history. Earth is the mother of all”…

“While it is not clear yet what actual protection the new rights will give in court to bugs, insects and ecosystems, the government is expected to establish a ministry of mother earth and to appoint an ombudsman. It is also committed to giving communities new legal powers to monitor and control polluting industries.”
