Liberty University fines students for not listening to cult leader

Liberty University invited Mormon Glenn Beck to preach to its students at its compulsory convocation last week, handing out $10 fines to residential students who didn’t have a suitable excuse for not attending.

The Beck sermon continues a worrying trend that signals Liberty’s rapid retreat from Christian orthodoxy to an unapologetic embrace of false religions and heretics, starting with self-proclaimed messiah Rev. Moon in the 1990s, to Benny Hinn and the Mormon church today. Though it still markets itself as a Christian university, its definition as to what passes as Christian is not one shared by most of the churches that send their young people there for an education.

Ravi Zacharias: Popular Christian Apologist Speaks to 3,500 at Mormon Temple; Asks Faiths to Oppose ‘Lost Morality’ Together

Christian apologist and writer Ravi Zacharias addressed 3,500 evangelicals and Mormons at the LDS Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah, asking that people from the two faiths stand together to oppose “relativism” and “lost morality.”

The two-day “Freedom and Friendship” event held last Friday and Saturday marked the second time that Zacharias had spoken at the Tabernacle. The apologist’s first meeting occurred 10 years ago, when he became the first non-Mormon speaker in the Tabernacle in 105 years.

Zacharias’ focused on how Christians and Mormons should make sense of a culture that increasingly relies on a “pragmatic philosophy with no accountability,” during his talk on Saturday.

_____

While introducing Zacharias, the former president of Brigham Young University said that Mormons and Christians shared a love for the Lord Jesus Christ that would bring them together to stand for right to live by the truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

However, the truth has been seriously muddied, since the Mormon Jesus is different than the Christian Jesus.[1]

This interfaith bridge of working together for a cause is not new. Rick Warren has crossed it with the Muslims [2], and much of evangelical Christendom has been joining hands with Roman Catholicism [3]. As previously mentioned on this blog, the interfaith bridge is getting very crowded. They all say they are following the same Jesus, but be careful, your eternal destiny depends on which Jesus you follow.

Franklin Graham Was ‘Shocked’ to Find Mormonism Is a Cult Article on BGEA Site

A month after the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association removed an article describing Mormonism as a “cult” from its website, ministry head Franklin Graham clarified on Wednesday that he was unaware of the article’s existence.

The evangelist told CNN that he did not write the article and that he was “shocked” to find the article on the BGEA website.

Rick Warren cancels Obama-Romney forum at Saddleback Church
By ERIKA I. RITCHIE / THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

LAKE FOREST – Rick Warren, Saddleback Church’s pastor, announced Wednesday that a civil forum planned with President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney at the church has been canceled because of what Warren saw as uncivil discourse between the two campaigns.
The forum, planned for this week, would have been two hours long, with each candidate speaking with Warren for 50 minutes. The event would have fallen during the same week when four years ago Warren hosted the first such presidential campaign forum, between then-Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain. Warren said it was the 2008 forum’s success among critics and pundits that led him to consider the idea again this year.

Rich Mouw on Why Evangelicals Need to Be Quick to Listen to Mormons
The president of Fuller Theological Seminary on ‘Talking with Mormons.’

Richard J. Mouw startled many in the Christian world with a seven-minute speech in November 2004 that detailed how evangelicals had “sinned against Mormons.” By that, the president of Fuller Theological Seminary meant evangelicals had misrepresented what Mormons believed in order to critique them. Mouw, a longtime participant in Mormon interfaith dialogues, has spent endless hours defending his statements to evangelical friends and colleagues. He continues this outreach in Talking with Mormons: An Invitation to Evangelicals (Eerdmans). Salt Lake Tribune religion reporter Peggy Fletcher Stack spoke with Mouw on the evolving nature of Latter-day Saint (LDS) theology, where it touches and where it diverges from historic Christianity, and how believers can systematically consider faiths outside the Christian fold.

Mormons are Christians, says Osteen
November 25, 2011

Texas mega-church pastor Joel Osteen says he believes Mormons are Christians.

The statement came yesterday in Washington in response to a reporter’s questions about politics. Osteen said he likes Texas Governor Rick Perry and prays for his candidacy in the GOP presidential candidate race. But Osteen said he also disagreed with a fellow Texas pastor — Robert Jeffress — who recently stated that Perry’s political opponent, Mitt Romney, was “not a Christian” because he is a Mormon, and that Mormonism is a “cult.”
