Because they heard the word…

MARKED WITH THE SPIRIT

February 11, 2011

by Dena McMaster

The Dinangat believers had blended some of their old beliefs with Bible lessons, but when missionary Gary Smith was checking a lesson from Ephesians 1:13 with his Dinangat co-worker, Ronnie, the Dinangat man’s eyes of understanding opened.

The verse reads, “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were marked with the Holy Spirit of promise.”

When he heard that Ronnie sat up and said, “Wait, you mean it’s not with water? The Dinangat religious leaders had always said that by baptizing babies with water they would be protected from illness, evil spirits and even death. So we thought they were marked with water.”

Gary had not realized that the Dinangats had tried to blend old beliefs with new truth so he wanted to put a paragraph or two of explanation into the lesson. But Ronnie said, “Oh no, just say it’s not with water or anything.”

Another refreshing testimony of the power of the gospel to save:

Chinese woman leads dozens to Christ with 70¢ tract
Posted on Jan 28, 2011 | by Sue Sprenkle

THAILAND (BP)–No one notices the young Chinese woman silently crying in the back pew. It’s the only place she finds solace from her deep depression and fear of death.

She’s not even sure why she sits in this church every afternoon; her communist education and Buddhist religion teach against a belief in God. Yet something keeps drawing Lily Wang* here.

She pulls a Bible from the pew. It’s not in her native Mandarin, but she flips it open anyway. She learned to read a little Thai after moving to Thailand a few years ago to teach school, but she hasn’t learned enough to really understand this.

So many questions cloud her mind that she finally musters enough courage to speak to a man carrying the same book. He brushes past the petite woman and goes about his business. The rejection reinforces everything she’s feeling — no one is interested in her; no one cares.

Distraught and angry, Wang walks to the foot of the cross and screams, “Are you real?

When you are feeling empty, lonely or spiritually dry, instead of dipping your toes into the different streams of contemplative spiritual formation (via contemplative prayer, silent retreats, centering prayer, spiritual discplines, getting to know your true self, or taking a labyrinth walk) [1] in order to get closer to God, try instead just simply saturating yourself in the living water of His Word. He has promised it will not return void!

So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth;
It will not return to Me empty,
Without accomplishing what I desire,
And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11

Take it from someone who lived it…

“I went onto the balcony and opened my Bible to the book of Hebrews. I started reading the first chapter in the way I always had, analyzing and studying the text as I read.

But something was wrong, I said to myself, “I’m not receiving a thing.” Then I looked right up to God and said aloud, “Father, You said that ‘man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord’ (Deut. 8:3). Now Lord, I am a missionary, and I am supposed to tell others that they can live by the Word of God. If I myself do not live there, I’m a phony. Now please prove that I can do this. Lord I am serious, I am asking You. You promise that You will reward a person who truly seeks You. Lord it is up to You! I am going to begin reading again. Lord, please make Hebrews come alive to me.” I began to read Hebrews again, starting from the beginning.

The next time I looked up, I had finished the whole book. Almost four hours had gone by. Looking back I cannot explain any particular truth the Lord gave me or remember any particular verse that shone with special meaning. But what happened was this. Through reading God’s Word in the power of the Holy Spirit and depending upon God to give life through it, it was as though God had picked me up and taken me into Heaven where He dwells. I had been with Him! My entire spiritual being was renewed. Leaving the balcony, feelings of lassitude disappeared, depression was gone–I had received God’s words and was rejuvenated in every part of my being.

I write this because it has been one of the secrets of my life. Again and again in China it was impossible to avoid acute loneliness. Sometimes there were acute problems and I suffered from depression. Then I would remember the solution–to saturate myself in God’s Word, in other words, God Himself.”

~ Revelation 22 ~

I. The river of paradise. The earthly paradise was well watered: no place can be pleasant or fruitful that is not so. This river is described,

1. By its fountain-head-the throne of God and the Lamb. All our springs of grace, comfort, and glory, are in God; and all our streams from him are through the mediation of the Lamb.

2. By its quality-pure and clear as crystal. All the streams of earthly comfort are muddy; but these are clear, salutary, and refreshing, giving life, and preserving life, to those who drink of them.

~METAPHOR~

Fountains yield pure and unmixed water. Streams are sometimes, muddy, they may be defiled; but Fountain-water is clear, fair, and without filth.

~PARALLEL~

The water in this spiritual Fountain, Christ, is pure, clear as crystal; there is no mud, nor the least mixture of any defilement in it, Revelation 22:1-2. Men have endeavoured to foul and pollute the doctrine of Christ, and his ordinances, which flowed from him; but truth in itself, in the Fountain, is still the same, and cannot be corrupted.
